About our Sponsor

GreenChemWeb is sponsored by the Centre for Green Chemistry, a research facility at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

GreenChemWeb is seeking to partner with organisations which share a passion and interest in Green Chemistry. We seek to remain independent, not representing any one organisation or country, but rather the ideals, and the science of Green Chemistry. If you'd like to associated with this initiative, we'd like to hear from you.

About the Author

In 2001, I took up the position of Community Liaison Officer for a new research facility, the Centre for Green Chemistry at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. I put together a Schools Outreach Program and travelled all over the country, visiting hundreds of schools with a chemistry demo show to teach the principles of green chemistry. It was a fairly new concept at the time, but it was very popular and generated a lot of interest amongst teachers and students. The culmination of this work was successfully incorporating a chapter on green chemistry in the year 11 (K11) chemistry curriculum in the State of Victoria. For my efforts I was awarded a Green Chemistry Challenge Award (Education) by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI).

With a background in hazardous materials management, and having represented the community on pollution issues, I found Green Chemistry to be a uniquely proactive and positive means of enabling change. Rather than say "you shouldn't do that", it allows you to say "try this instead". As Paul Anastas once said to me, "you can argue and lobby and try for years to get people to change their ways, but they'll change overnight if you just give them better technology". I believe Green Chemistry is the key to that better technology, achieving sustainable use of energy and materials, and eliminating chemical pollution. I think we've only just begun, and there's a long way to go, but if we embrace Green Chemistry then we have the means and the know-how to actually change the world for the better.

On my very first day on the job in 2001, I googled "Green Chemistry" and got 30 web hits. That was a decade ago, today the same search will generate over 500,000 results! It's been great to see Green Chemistry grow online, but there's been no one place where you can find everything - until now. So here it is, a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to all things Green Chemistry, I hope you find it useful.

Cheers,

Michael Clarke, BSc, GradDip (GreenChem).
