Green Chemistry starts in the classroom!
Here you'll find teaching materials for junior school, senior school, college and university, some online tutorials and links to green chemistry courses.
Get started today in the theory and practice of green chemistry!

Learning Green (Carnegie Mellon University)
Online introductory course in Green Chemistry created by the Institute for Green Science at Carnegie Mellon University. The material is quite comprehensive, with nine lessons divided into four modules. Each lesson has links to articles, presentations and video lectures. You can work through short assignments and test your knowledge with a quiz at the end of each lesson. This is an excellent resource, all of which is available online for free. Registering allows you to record notes and monitor your progress.

Green Chemistry Education Network (University of Oregon)
This site provides useful resources, events and links for Green Chemistry Educators. Show your support, and join this network!

GEMS (University of Oregon)
GEMs (Greener Educational Materials for Chemists) is a database of practical green chemistry activities. Search by topic, technique or student level. An excellent resource, also seeking contributions.

Beyond Benign (USA)
Non profit organisation dedicated to Green Chemistry education and outreach, offering workshops and online programs for teacher professional development, and some great resources for the classroom. Activity quick links : Middle school | High school | College

Green Chemistry Labs (The Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry)
A handful of laboratory experiments for undergraduates. Well presented and easy to follow.

Greening across the Chemistry Curriculum (University of Scranton)
Written by Mike C Cann in the early 2000's, these old html pages are bit, well, old, but the content is just as relevant and useful today. Professor Cann was (and still is) quite influential in teaching new green chemistry concepts, his work on atom economy in particular, is worth a look. These modules introduce green chemistry under a number of subject areas you'll find in traditional curriculum, each with presentations, teacher notes and examples. These pages are also available in Spanish and Portugese.

Green Chemistry Educational Resources (ACS Green Chemistry Institute)
Links to resources, ACS publications and a number of classroom activities available as pdf downloads.

Green Chemistry Resource Exchange (ACS Green Chemistry Institute)
An initiative of the ACS-GCI, this resource exchange was set up a number of years ago, but after an initial flurry of interest, there hasn't been much done to populate or maintain this resource. What is good about it, however, are the contributions from industry as well as academia, so you can explore a few real life examples of green chemistry (so long as the links aren't broken).

Biomimicry Institute (USA)
Non profit organisation promoting the study and imitation of efficient designs from nature as a basis for sustainable technologies. Biomimicry is largely focused on material design, but intersects with green chemistry and engineering. This site has a page of teacher resources, available for free download if you register.

BioDreamMachine (USA)
More education resources on biomimicry, a bit light for content, but there's a couple of lesson plans and links to articles.

A motley collection of dubious compounds under investigation by the USEPA. Have you seen or heard of alternatives?

The Periodic Table (Rapping the elements!)
Science communicator Jon Chase (aka Oortkuiper), and his brilliant take on the periodic table. A bit off topic, but too good to miss.

Green Schools Initiative (USA)
Resources and ideas for teaching sustainability and greening up your school.

Greening your school (Australia)
Guidance, resources and rating tools to help schools improve their environmental performance, from the Green Building Council of Australia.

Center for Green Schools (USA)
The U.S. Green Building Council provide news, resources on green design, operation and curriculum for the K-12 and higher education sectors.

Learning and Teaching Sustainability (Australian Learning and Teaching Council)
Resource site for teaching sustainability across all disciplines.

Youtube for teachers. You'll find videos of chemistry demonstrations and step by step guides to practical activities, if you've got the time to search.
